FAQ

  • Our protocol is designed to prevent, reduce progression and, to a certain degree, reverse Dementia so that residents can live as independently as possible. We can accommodate all four stages. Our staff are specifically trained in caring for residents with neurodegenerative disease. Stage 4 may require additional hours of care since independence reduces. The Rēsidence is a Lifeplan Community meaning that it is designed to adapt to the residents, avoiding the need to move to another facility which can be very stressful and confusing.

Dementia typically progresses through four stages, each characterized by increasing cognitive and functional decline. The first stage, or mild cognitive impairment (MCI), involves subtle memory lapses and difficulties with concentration, but individuals can generally function independently. In the second stage, mild dementia, memory loss becomes more noticeable, with difficulties in planning, managing finances, or remembering recent events, though individuals can still carry out daily activities with some support. The third stage, moderate dementia, brings more pronounced memory issues, confusion about time or place, difficulty recognizing familiar people, and a need for assistance with personal care, such as dressing or eating. In the final stage, severe dementia, individuals experience profound cognitive decline, loss of communication abilities, and total dependence on caregivers for basic needs, with significant physical deterioration often occurring as well.

  • No, we can accept residents who do not have Neurodegenerative Disease. Our protocol is designed to prevent Neurodegenerative Disease, so it is a good option for those who would like to reduce the likelihood of neurodegeneration.

  • It is often better for a person with dementia to reside in a specialized memory care facility because the staff are specifically trained and experienced in managing the condition. They understand the unique needs, behaviors, and challenges dementia presents, enabling them to provide personalized care and support. These facilities are equipped with resources and programs designed to improve the quality of life for residents, such as specialized therapies, structured routines, and secure and social environments that prevent wandering and ensure proper supervision. Overall, the specialized care and expertise available in memory care facilities can greatly enhance the safety and well-being of individuals with dementia, compared to staying at home or in a general care setting.

  • Our team can assist with the whole process of obtaining a D7 passive income (retirement) visa for non-EU residents.

There are added tax advantages to Portuguese residency, including no inheritance tax and a flat 10% tax rate on pension and income.

  • Great question. There are studies showing that intergenerational connections enhance well-being for all groups. These interactions provide older people with fresh perspectives, a sense of purpose and the opportunity to share their wisdom and experiences. Being around younger generations can boost mental and emotional health by reducing feelings of loneliness and isolation, while also keeping older individuals engaged and mentally stimulated. In turn, younger generations gain valuable insights, develop empathy and build a deeper appreciation for history and life experiences.

So, we have created a program called Rēnew which provides the opportunity for younger people to benefit from all of the amenities at The Rēsidence in a longer format program (similar to our Rēset programs) so both groups can co-exist and benefit.

  • The Rēsidence was started because there is a lack of high quality care in general in the assisted living space, especially when it comes to Neurodegenerative Disease. We want to maintain integrity and high standards - there is proof that both dissipate when investors are involved in Assisted Living facilities along with the health outcomes of the residents. We want The Rēsidence to be a true home, not a statistic in an investment portfolio. The only way for us to do this is to require a buy-in fee.

The buy-in fee is refundable: 100% within the first month of residence if the resident decides it isn't a good fit. 90% after the first year, 80% after the second, 70% after the third, 60% after the fourth and 50% after the fifth year.

  • Portugal offers some of the best healthcare in the world. Compared to the high costs of healthcare in the U.S., Americans can expect to pay a fraction of what they would at home. Private health insurance in Portugal is affordable for all ages, often featuring low copays or no deductibles, and even covering some pre-existing conditions.

Expats who become full-time residents gain access to both the public and private healthcare systems, including hospitals and clinics.

Public and/or private healthcare is required to live at The Rēsidence. Our team can help to register you in the system (as well as assist with the residency process if required).
