Somatic Therapy
Trauma release and nervous system regulation.
Trauma can have many different origins, generally from an event (acute or chronic) that is perceived as a life-threat. When a traumatic event happens, the autonomic nervous system goes into fight, flight or freeze mode. In the past, when threats were more acute e.g. a tiger chasing you, the large amount of energy generated to fight or flee would be discharged through swimming, running, climbing, shaking or trembling. Animals naturally discharge their energy after a hunt or attack through movement.
Today, most of our traumas are kept inside and the autonomic nervous system remains stuck. The goal of Somatic Therapy is to release trauma stored in the body and rebalance the nervous system through specific exercises that generate trembling/shaking. It is not necessary to talk about the traumatic event - some people can’t even recall the traumatic event - just to regulate the body’s response.
