YOGA & Working-in
Yoga
In Sanskrit yoga means union, this is a modality integrating mind, body and energy. Practicing yoga is a means of staying present in the body, it is a moving meditation. Practicing yoga reduces inflammation, builds strength and increases flexibility and balance. During an active, yang practice, the focus is on learning how to sit with discomfort and cultivate resilience in response to stress in the body and mind. Yin and restorative practices are focused on tapping into the parasympathetic nervous system through long holds and slow, deep breaths.
Working-In
Bodies are like car batteries in that they charge up as they move. However, when we work-out the energy is charged up and then given back to the movement, meaning we end up back at the same baseline. When we work-in, we move in such a way that energy is still created but some of it is reserved for ourselves. Think of it like an energy bank account – when we work-out we make an income but spend it right away. When we work-in we deposit the energy in the account and spend less, meaning the ‘bank balance’ grows. We work-in by syncing our movements to our own natural, relaxed, breathing pattern. We maintain the same breathing rate, the same heart rate, and the same body temperature throughout the practice. There are many movements that can be used for a work-in and we will teach you some examples during your retreat. However, please do play around with any movements that feel good for you, providing they follow the guidelines above.
